The Last of The Classics

 ARNO BREKER

(1900 -1991)

The impulse toward monumentality is a part of me. The monumental is my sickness. I'm always delighted to see a successful monumental sculpture, whether it's Michelangelo's David, or Andrea del Verrocchio's statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni, or the Venus de Milo

ABOUT REICH CHANCELARY COURTYARD

"My figures were to make sweeping gestures away from the entrance, and to have a relationship to the building. I could hardly install Adam and Eve there. In my view, the only sensible embellishment was to set a spiritual man on one side, symbolized by a flame, and on the other, the defender of the country, a man with a sword. So I set to work on it at home, and came back two weeks later with my sketches. They were displayed, and Speer didn't say much. Then we parted. He immediately called Hitler, who saw them and was instantly enthralled. The names of the figures, "Party" and "Wehrmacht," were his invention."

ABOUT "BEREITSCHAFT"

My model was Germany's youth, who were soldiers in body and soul. That really made an impression on me.

ABOUT ALEXANDER THE GREAT

"I've received an invitation from Greece to produce a monument to Alexander the Great. Of course, It's a wonderful thing for me. But I'm 79 years old. I can no longer produce figures that are 10 meters tall. I'm restricted by my age. But the theme, this look, it still fascinates me."

AGAINST THE HUMAN IMAGE OF TODAY

"The disintegration of the human image, as we are experiencing it today, that is undoubtedly a manifestation of decadence."

"There is no hint of decadence in me"

THE GREEKS AS THE MAIN INFLUENCE

"My earlier works were influenced by Rodin. Later, I found my ideal in the Greeks."

The Dangers of Mixing With The Mob - An Advise From Seneca

Do you ask me what you should regard as especially to be avoided? I say, crowds; for as yet you cannot trust yourself to them with safety. I shall admit my own weakness, at any rate; for I never bring back home the same character that I took abroad with me. Something of that which I have forced to be calm within me is disturbed; some of the foes that I have routed return again. Just as the sick man, who has been weak for a long time, is in such a condition that he cannot be taken out of the house without suffering a relapse, so we ourselves are affected when our souls are recovering from a lingering disease. To consort with the crowd is harmful; there is no person who does not make some vice attractive to us, or stamp it upon us, or taint us unconsciously therewith. Certainly, the greater the mob with which we mingle, the greater the danger.

Book Recommendations For The Coming of Spring

OMAIMON PARADOSIS reading recommendations. Most of this books can be found in the usual sites like Amazon etc if not in local bookstores.

- A MEANS TO FREEDOM - The Letters of H.P.Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard
Massive! A work in two volumes. The corespondance of the best American writters ever.
Covering the period of 1930 to 1936. A talk between giants!

- HITLER'S VIENNA
Excellent and in-depth work about Hitler's poverty years in Vienna. In fact, its something like a
a continuation where August Kubizek left off with his "The Young Hitler I knew"

- THE CONQUERING OF BERLIN
Joseph Goebbels' first hand account about the years of strife. From the moment
that appointed as Gaulaiter of Berlin. Equally excellent as "From the Kaizerhof to the Reich Chancellery".
Just it covers more years and with more details and stories. A must!!!!
Here is the Greek version.

- THE BEST ONES LEFT IN STALINGRAND
Unfortunately there a Greek version only of this book.
The memoirs of Martin Jordan a Wehrmacht officer (Cavalry Division) that took part in all the major battles of WWII.
Poland, France and most importantly in the Operation Barbarossa.
After the war, Martin Jordan married a Greek woman and spend the rest of his years in Hellas. In 1994 he printed this book by himself in Athens ( and not by a publishing house) limited to 200 copies only! To my suprize, I found a last copy in a second hand bookstore few weeks ago.

- COSMOPOLITAN NATIONALISTS
Again a Greek version only. With a very provocative and contradictory title.
A book exclusively about French Nationalist writter Maurice Barres and the influence
that his ideas had across Europe and countries like Hellas, Spain, Italy and also in
the movements of Fascism and National Socialism.

- JULIUS CAESAR
The Hellenic Version of this classic of Shakespeare. I already had a post-00s version of it,
but I`ve got as a gift a 1950's (May 1953 to be more extact) edition with a great looking cover. The difference of every other version out there is the translator. Apart from a truly Shakespeare expert, he was also a war veteran that fought in Balkan Wars in 1910's and also in the Minor
Asia campaign in 1920's as an officer in the Hellenic army. He also had pro-Nationalist
and anti-democratic ideas, plus his language skills are over the top!

CONSERVATISM IN EUROPE - Traditionalism, Reaction and Counter Revolution 1770-1945
A book about how the movements of Post French Revolution era influenuenced and led to the creation of National Socialism and Fascism. The roots of this movements in
early conservatism, Romanticism etc Intreasting book and very informative. Especially about 18th  and 19th centuries.

KASTROLOGOS - A Guide To The Castles of Hellas

Blog's Comment : A very good (probably the best currently) site (both in Greek and English language) about the Castles of Hellas. Apart from the historical info. With its many pics, exact map locations, plenty of photos it can be very useful guide for anyone intrested to visit this previous relics of the past or just want to know more about their history.

Kastrologos (www.kastra.eu) is a bilingual website about the Greek Medieval Castles. It is a work in progress. It will always be.

For the moment, 1031 Greek castles are recorded in the site. For each castle, there is one dedicated page with data, pictures, maps and other information. There are more castles to be added, but most of them are already here.

The initial concept was to deal with medieval constructions only. This changed, when it became clear that many well-known monuments of this kind would be left out (such as the “White Tower”, “Palamidi” etc.). Hence, the database finally covers Greek castles from the Early Byzantine period (5th century A.D.) until the 19th century.

Ancient fortresses, which were abandoned before the beginning of the Middle Ages, are not included. There are plenty of those in Greece, but they are beyond the scope of this site. Also, out are recent fortifications built after the end of the 19th century.

This is a personal, non-profit project. It is also a huge one, considering the scarcity of time and resources. Moreover, there is an astonishing shortage of information –online and in bibliography– about Greek castles. Therefore, any input and any kind of contribution by the friends of the site (and of Castles) would be extremely valuable and welcomed.

A Eulogy for a Friend & Hero

Written By Fullmoon Ancestry

They say that you should never meet or get to know your heroes, but I completely disagree.

I have been very fortunate in my life to have gotten to know many of the heavy metal musicians who I grew up listening to. Whether I was working backstage at concerts or on tour with my favorite bands, I have seen many of my heroes at their best and worst. Discovering that your heroes and idols also flatulate and drink too much might ruin the music and childhood memories for many people, but for me, it only made the music and experiences with my heroes that much more exciting and authentic.

Unfortunately, as a result it is that much more devastating when one of my heroes passes away. This has been the case for me this month after the passing of Isidoros Galanis, better known in the underground metal community as guitarist Hjarulv Henker of Dreadful Relic, Wodulf, and Der Stürmer.

Hjarulv was born in Greece on December 3, 1974. He grew up listening to various underground metal bands of the 1980s. After being involved in tape-trading and publishing band-related zines in the 1990s, he began playing guitar for a black metal project of his own that would become infamously known around the world as Der Stürmer.

Behind the overt lyrics and abrasive sound, Hjarulv’s guitar riffs and melodies struck a chord with me the first time I heard them on a compilation album in the mid-2000s. Over a decade later, I would eventually see Der Stürmer in concert. It was then that I got to know Hjarulv personally.

Having learned a little of the Greek language in preparation for my travels in the country, I decided to approach the guys in Der Stürmer at one of their concerts and offer to buy them beers in Greek. Although I probably made plenty of grammar and pronunciation mistakes, they took me up on my offer and we had a few beers at the concert venue. Hjarulv eventually invited me backstage and we ended up sharing laughs and stories about all of our favorite musicians, bands, and concerts. Over the following year, I was lucky enough to spend time with Hjarulv in Italy, Finland, and Ukraine. No matter the location, Hjarulv always invited me to the after parties following each event, and he always made sure that I was having a good time. And I always had a great time with Hjarulv and his friends.

For being such an infamous musician, Hjarulv was very friendly, humble, and relatable. He was also very funny and had a great sense of humor. He kept encouraging me to get back into music. Thus, my New Year’s resolution for 2022 is to spend less time on the Internet and more time on music. But it was adhering to this goal that unfortunately made me miss the tragic news that Hjarulv had passed away from heart failure on January 1, 2022.

The news of his death was both shocking and devastating for me. Despite being somewhat
“blackpilled” by the ongoing lockdowns and travel restrictions, I had hopes of seeing all my friends, such as Hjarulv, at the next concert. And while I still look forward to attending concerts again in the future, I feel they will not be the same without Hjarulv there.

His recent passing has also made me contemplate the meaning of friendship, happiness, and my own priorities in life. I admit to becoming somewhat pessimistic about friendship as I have gotten older. I feel as though I have always done more for the people I considered
“friends” than they ever did for me. As Tony Soprano explained, “Friends will eventually let you down.” Yet, for all the people who have let me down in life, there have been a handful of people like Hjarulv who stayed in touch with me and kept my spirits up. And perhaps it is better to have a few reliable people in your life than a lot of unreliable “friends.” From experience, I know that it is better to be alone than in bad company.

I have spent much of the previous year living alone, but I rarely feel lonely. Each evening, I sip whisky in front of the fireplace next to my dog and listen to heavy metal. I have spent the last few evenings listening to Hjarulv’s music, along with all of his favorite bands. Hjarulv’s music inspired me to make music in the past, and now his memory inspires me to continue writing and creating music. Thanks to him, I have rediscovered my purpose and an additional source of happiness in my life.

It is up to each person to find their own purpose and happiness in this life. When I think of Hjarulv, I think of a heroic musician who played the music he wanted to make without any compromises, regardless of all the social pressures he faced and endured. Although it was cut short, I feel that he lived a happy and purposeful life doing what he enjoyed most.

I wish Hjarulv was still alive and I know that he will be missed at future concerts. Nevertheless, his spirit lives on in the music he created and the memories of the times I got to spend with him. Until I see him in the next life, I will take his advice and continue to make music in his honor, and for
“Those Who Lived and Died as Heroes.”

German Archaeological Research in Hellas 1933 - 1945

BLOG'S COMMENT : An intresting lecture that took place in Athens at 16th of December 2021. Organized by ASCSA (American School of Classical Studies at Athens). The main speaker which is an archeologist also has done a really in-depth and very informative work on the activities of SS AHNENERBE in Hellas during 1933-1944. Ofcourse do not expect any glorification of the National Socialist studies. But the video is really intresting as it contains a lot of info about the era and the excavations of the German Archeologists in Hellas.
