Tania Stene - An Artist that Works from The Shadows

Tania Stene is a Norwegian woman known as "Nacht" and except her participation in the excellent project AGHAST, she is also well-known amongst the Black Metal circles as the painter of some of the most iconic covers of the Norwegian scene. Over the years, there are no details known about her personal life and also there is really very few selected photos of her around.
Even if there are not good Norwegian albums any more, I hope she will continue to practice her craft as in my opinion she had really the touch of capturing the darkness and melancholy of the Norse landscapes.

For those not familiar with her artistic works. Below are some of them.

ULVER - Nattens Madrigal (1997)

ULVER - Bergtatt (1995)

BURZUM - Hlidskjalf (1999)

BURZUM - Daudi Baldrs (1997)

BURZUM - Balder's Dod

MEDICI Series Part II Coming Soon!

Just found out that a new second season coming soon. Ok, lets be honest, the first 12 episodes (as "Medici: Masters of Florence" , see here ) was real crap. My expectations was really high and all we got was another boring, dull and soap-opera style series. After that, I thought that this was over for good. But yesterday, looking between various trailers or movie spoilers saw this one following below. Normally, after such crush I would not give it a change or waste any time further, but the addition of Sean Bean (a fine actor!) and also that this season is about my favorite Renaissance personality, Lorenzo "il Magnifico", changed my mind radically about it. So soon I`ll check it.

In the meantime , if you want to know more about the real deal, then you check this masterpiece :

Black Sun in Albrecht Dürer's Art

Albrecht Dürer (May 21, 1471 - April 6, 1528) was a German painter, engraver, printmaker and mathematician. His extensive body of work includes altarpieces, religious works, portraits, self-portraits, woodcuts and copper engravings. Among his three large prints known as the Meisterstiche (master engravings) is the enigmatic MELENCOLIA I (1514) depicting the intellectual situation of the artist and, by extension, a spiritual self-portrait. The allegorical composition has been the subject of more interpretations suggest the image references the depressive or melancholy state, although some have seen it as an autobiographical portrait of Dürer's loss of self-confidence. Due to the extensive alchemical imagery in the print, the sun illuminating this scene has often been interpreted as the alchemical SOL NIGER, or BLACK SUN.

OUTLAW KING - 2018 Film Review

Despite the fact that the last (at least) 15 years I`ve refused to submit in the general Hollywood Anglophobia of "evil england vs every good man/state/army of this world", especially concerning anything from the early to late Medieval and Renaissance historical periods. Without a doubt there has been really good films but most of the times openly one-sided (See films like Braveheart, Rob Roy etc). Not that English rule was the most noble of all at times. Quite the contrary, but still the majority of the films focus only on that. It gets boring.

Knowing all that, I decided to give a chance to a new 2018 film named OUTLAW KING that released few weeks ago. Its about the story of Scotish nobleman Robert The Bruce and its scenario based on real historical facts. His fall and rise as a king starting in the period from the death of William Wallace and onwards.

I had low expectations. But to my suprize this film turned really good!
Excellent photography & directory. The story as it unfolds, the outstanding filming locations across Scotland and England , the very realistic combat scenes (both man-to-man and between armies as well) made this movie into a 2-hour watching pleasure.
For sure among my top 5 for 2018.

Check it out!

DREADFUL RELIC - Hyborian Sorcery - REVIEWS

Taken from : METAL OBSERVER

New Wave of First Wave Black Metal (NWOFWBM)

Do you ever get sick of listening to Celtic Frost? No? What about Hellhammer? No, too, huh? Well, since they don’t exist anymore, can I offer you another band whom I believe you will enjoy very much? Have I got a deal for you!
Their name is Dreadful Relic, and they released a superb CF/Hellhammer/first wave worship album in February. Even though the cover of the album looks more like a melodeath band (or something…I’m not really certain honestly), this is pure, simple, battering first wave black metal at its finest. The band’s biggest strength perhaps might be seen as its biggest weakness by some: these guys really sound like Tom G. Warrior and co. I mean, if the vocals weren’t different, I might think this was some lost CF release around the time of To Mega Therion. Fortunately, these guys have unique, deep, black metal vocals rather than Tommy G’s signature shout. It works really well in this context and I found it enjoyable throughout. Warm guitars punch out riff after riff of Celtic chaos that will have you banging your head from start to finish. They do an excellent job of mimicking the “is it black metal or is it something else or is it just its own thing” riffs of CF and Hellhammer. You’re asking if there are solos. Yes, there are solos, but they’re mostly just tremolo ravaged, maniacal shredders that serve to increase the turmoil. Occasionally, twisted melodies appear in the background, but these are just barely audible and are not the primary draw here. For the most part, this thing is fast paced and mean, simple and aggressive—no frills at all. The drummer just pounds away relentlessly, utilizing simple beat after simple beat to increase the power and force of the almighty riffs. The bass kind of just fuzzes in the background but provides a nice backdrop for the rest of the band. Occasionally one is provided a break from the madness—these come in the form of an intro (“Crom’s Ruinous Winds”), an interlude (“Stygian Oath”), and an outro (“Black doom in the Serpent’s Nest”). Otherwise, be prepared to be mutilated in just the most pleasant way.
I really wish I could write more about this album, because it is high quality, but it’s very difficult to move past “it sounds like Celtic Frost,” because there really isn’t a better way to describe these guys. This album is something special and something you’ve heard before at the same time. On the one hand, we’ve heard this done better by Celtic Frost. But on the other hand, nobody could expect someone to do To Mega Therion better than them, and these guys do it better than most. If you’re looking to re-enter the Circle of the Tyrants, give this one a shot.

Taken from: PSICOTERROR

For those who have read the interview with this band featured on the tenth edition of Psicoterror, will know that Dreadful Relic are not a band with the premise of re-creating a sound already exploited far and wide through the entire history of Black and death metal. They do it for a reason, though. The link between the archaic elements within black and death metal in lyrics are music are intertwined and they simply belong to each other. Dreadful Relic explores not only the foundations of Black and death metal musically, but also they have explored and dive deep with the pre-historic writings of Robert E. Howard which served perfectly to illustrate and justify their musical introspection. “Hyborian Sorcery” is a journey to the foundations of ancient metal and ancient mythical realms, where Gods, Men, Demigods and Demons interacted in such a way of Barbaric Conflict and struggle for domination. In order to properly illustrate this, they have chosen to go into the very roots of metal, being Hellhammer / Celtic frost and old Samael their main influences. Yes, their songs may become intuitive for those who are familiar with these bands, but they do manage somehow to impress with unexpected elements within their music. As with previous releases, they have also included a few ambient pieces to set the mood of the record and surprisingly they work well.
Dreadful Relic is a band which is showing to the new generations the primigenious and basic elements which forged Black and Death metal, and making everything anew as a remembrance of what Archaic metal was, and how this can’t be changed with Time, even if trends may come and go.

Review by INFERNAL RETURN

When I put this record on I wasnt sure what to think. It was great, it was evil, and it was nostalgic. But.. What is this?
I am reminded of Celtic Frost when I listen to this album, for it's one of those bands who clearly have a blackened twost on classic genres, with a heavily distort but smooth guitars delivery. Yet, this album is anything but a Celtic Frost worship band.
The bass guitar is so crushing, the distortion serves as a solid backdrop for this energetic and ferocious riffage. It's like being kicked in the ribs at a moderaye pace, just casually bein brutalized.
The vocals really sell this album. It's like a mix of Tom Warrior and (ND)
As mentioned, the nostalgia is worth talking about. I love how many first wave black metal this album crams in without being another copy / worship band. The main riff in the title track for example, reminds me loosely of Slayer's "Die By The Sword"; "The Runik Citadel" reminds me loosely of Celtic Frost's "Procreation of the Wicked"; "Gravedigger of a Rotten World" reminds me of a Welcome to Hell era Venom song.
I mean this album is a buldozer of a fucking album and has such a carefree riff style with threatening and agressive vocals. I just love how nostalgic, while refraining from being another clone, this album is. Triumphant little bastard

Warfare Soundtrack

"It's not a pretty song by any means. An aural blitzkrieg whose chorus climaxes with the lines, 'The final swing is not a drill/It's how many people I can kill,' it is filled with brutal images and blaring guitars, all propelled at the breathless pace of thrash metal."

"So accurately sums up the controlled panic of combat that the Army itself has been using Slayer songs to psych its troops for military maneuvers in the Saudi desert"

Aesthetics of War

"For twenty-seven years, we Futurists have rebelled against the idea that war is anti-aesthetic….
We therefore state: … War is beautiful because - thanks to its gas masks, its terrifying megaphones, its flame throwers, and light tanks-it establishes man’s dominion over the subjugated machine. War is beautiful because it inaugurates the dreamed-of metallization of the human body. War is beautiful because it enriches a flowering meadow with the fiery orchids of machine-guns. War is beautiful because it combines gllnfire) barrages, cease-fires, scents, and the fragrance of putrefaction into a symphony. War is beautiful because it creates new architectures, like those of armored tanks, geometric squadrons of aircraft, spirals of smoke from burning villages, and much more. . . . Poets and artists of Futurism,… remember these principles of an aesthetic of war, that they may illuminate … your struggles for a new poetry and a new sculpture!"

The First Brother War - Remembering Its End

11th of November 1918 is the official date that the WWI ended.

"And yet the strangest thing of all was not the horror of the landscape in itself, but the fact that these scenes, such as the world had never known before, were fashioned by men who intended them to be a decisive end to the war. Thus all the frightfulness that the mind of man could devise was brought into the field; and there, where lately there had been the idyllic picture of rural peace, there was as faithful a picture of the soul of scientific war."

"For I cannot too often repeat, a battle was no longer an episode that spent itselt in blood and fire; it was a condition of things that dug itself in remorselessly week after week and even month after month. What was a man's life in this wilderness whose vapor was laden with the stench of thousands upon thousands of decaying bodies? Death lay in ambush for each one in every shell-hole, merciless, and making one merciless in turn. Chivalry here took a final farewell. It had to yield to the heightened intensity of war, just as all fine and personal feeling has to yield when machinery gets the upper hand. The Europe of today appeared here for the first time on the field of battle."

Echoes of Solitude and Forest Wandering

Original Title : Snø Og Granskog
Poem by

Music from : DARKTHRONE "Panzerfaust" (1995)

ENGLISH TRANSLATION:

SNOW AND SPRUCE FOREST

Talk about what home is—
snow and spruce forest
is home.

From the very start
it is ours.
Before anyone has told us
that it is snow and spruce forest,
it has its place in us—
and then it is there
the whole, whole time.

Waist-high drift
around dark trees
—it's here for us!
Mixed into our own breath.
The whole, whole time,
though no one sees it,
we have snow and spruce forest with us.

Yes, the hill under snow,
and tree upon tree
as far as you gaze—
wherever we are
we find ourselves
facing this.

And have in us a promise
about coming home.
Coming home,
going out there,
bending branches,
and feeling so it flares in you
what it is to be where you belong.
The whole, whole time,
until it is put out in our inland hearts.

Lost in Klessin - 2018 Film

Trailer of Lost in Klessin (2018).
After "Wir Waren Kameraden" (by Peter Filmproduktion), Heintje Peter directed his second movie called "Lost in Klessin"

The main story of  Verloren in Klessin (Lost in Klessin) focuses on the events that took place near the river Oder in February/March 1945. While the Russians moved closer towards German home ground and towards Berlin forces were drawn to Klessin, a small village located not far from a strategic crossing over the river Oder. At the same time refugees from former German territories already in Russian control pass the area. Captain von Stock and his battle group come upon a trek of refugees and aide them find shelter and rest before they continue their journey to the west. The narration alternates between the military and political events of the time and the deeply personal relationship between Captain von Stock and a small girl who lost her mother fleeing from the approaching Red Army.

Farewell to Robert Faurisson

Cattle die, kindred die,
Every man is mortal:
But the good name never dies
Of one who has done well
Havamal 76

"I was stunned when I discovered how generous and chivalrous Aeschylus had been with his enemies, perhaps only eight years after their defeat. It was not Christianity that brought generosity and a spirit of chivalry to the pagans. The pagans already understood those things. If Aeschylus were to come back to earth today he would not be able to understand how it is that forty years after the defeat of Germany there is still so much hate against Germany. In our society everything is used up very quickly and changed quickly, but not this hate for Germany. There is nothing like this feeling against the Japanese. I think it is the terrible responsibility of Jews for maintaining this hate. Jews have no complaints against the Japanese. That is why they do not ask the American people to keep up a hatred against them. There are no longer any "war criminals" among those who were not enemies, or were not thought to be enemies, of the Jews. "Crimes against humanity" really means crimes against Jews. You would think only the Jews were really human beings. What about the rest of us?"

Lives of a Bengal Lancer - The Spirit of the Superior Race and The Marvelous History of a Movie

The "The Lives of a Bengal Lancer" is a 1935 American film based on the autobiography of the British officer Francis Yeats-Brown. In the article below you`ll see the astonishing history behind this film, its admirers and the impact it had in the National Socialist world.

"handful of Britons holding a continent in thrall. That was how a superior race must behave and the film was compulsory viewing for the S.S."
ADOLF HITLER - 1937

About the movie

Henry Hathaway's 1935 movie Lives of a Bengal Lancer is largely forgotten today. Most people would associate  'Bengal Lancer'  with an Indian restaurant or an Indian cricket team. Yet in its time the movie was the equivalent of aSpiderman movie today. It remains famous for making a longtime box office star of Gary Cooper. And it was one of the early 'buddy movie' successes, still popular today, in which a group of friends boldly fight incredible odds in the cause of country and glory.....

 About the book

The movie was based on the memoirs of Francis Yeats-Brown (1886-1944). Published in 1930, the book covered the author's time in the Bengal Lancers in the decade before World War I. Yeats-Brown had a privileged upbringing (Harrow and Sandhurst), and joined the British army in India. He soon became part of the Bengal Lancers, serving in the turbulent North West Frontier. During World War I Yeats-Brown served in the Royal Flying Corps in France and Iraq, gaining a DFC for bravery. He was a prisoner of war for two years after beiong captured by the Turks. After the war he reurned to the Indian army for four years. He then became a journalist....

The Enormity of Our Task

IAN STUART DONALDSON
11 August 1957 – 24 September 1993

‘The enormity of our task is almost beyond comprehension. Sometimes state oppression, red opposition, and treachery by traitors in our midst makes us all feel like giving up – but at all costs we must continue our battle. Our fight begins in Europe, and spreads across the White World. Certain moments in our lives makes us realise the massive importance of our task. I have walked through Antwerp in the early evening as Nationalists gather in the bars. The beautiful architecture in the Flemish City embodies European genius – the evening in Rotterdam, as the lights of the great Dutch City sparkle as we have been made welcome by our comrades; an afternoon in Stockholm, frost upon the ground, then a journey on the train to Gothenburg as the beauty of Sweden and Scandinavia hypnotises me. I think of Germany, France, Italy and all the other great nations of Europe. Then I think of our cousins in the U.S.A., Australia, and beyond. White men made these nations and if White men do not stand up and fight their enemies our world will crumble. If this happens, when we are gone, someday and somewhere, the ghosts of the warriors who did fight will stand and accuse those cowards who did not. That will be the day of reckoning. We must all make some kind of contribution, and my songs are but a small part of what I hope to contribute to the survival of the White Race.’

Archetypes of Woodlords - Herne The Hunter

"In English folklore, Herne the Hunter is a ghost associated with Windsor Forest and Great Park in the English county of Berkshire. He is said to naturally have antlers upon his head, ride a horse, torment cattle, and rattle chains."

"In the Early Middle Ages, Windsor Forest came under the control of the pagan Angles who worshipped their own pantheon of gods, including Woden, whose Norse equivalent Odin rode across the night sky with his own Wild Hunt and hanged himself on the world tree Yggdrasil to learn the secret of the runic alphabet. It has been suggested that the name Herne is derived from the title Herian,a title used for Woden in his role as leader of fallen warriors"

Sometime a keeper here in Windsor Forest,
Doth all the winter-time, at still midnight,
    Walk round about an oak, with great ragg'd horns;
And there he blasts the tree, and takes the cattle,
And makes milch-kine yield blood, and shakes a chain
In a most hideous and dreadful manner.
You have heard of such a spirit, and well you know
    The superstitious idle-headed eld
Receiv'd, and did deliver to our age,
This tale of Herne the Hunter for a truth.

Winter as the Current Phase of Civilization

"Now is the winter of our discontent
Made glorious summer by this sun of York;
And all the clouds that lour'd upon our house
In the deep bosom of the ocean buried.
Now are our brows bound with victorious wreaths;
Our bruised arms hung up for monuments;
Our stern alarums changed to merry meetings,
Our dreadful marches to delightful measures.
Grim-visaged war hath smooth'd his wrinkled front;
And now, instead of mounting barded steeds
To fright the souls of fearful adversaries,
He capers nimbly in a lady's chamber
To the lascivious pleasing of a lute."

Nelly's - Photography as a Racial Art

Elli Seraidari (better known as Nelly's) is by far the most famous Greek photographer of all time and one of the world's most celebrated photographers of the interwar period. She was referred to as "The Greek Leni Riefenstahl" because of her collaboration with the Fascist regime of the Fourth of August (1936-1941), of which she was the official photographer.

Passionate and patriotic about her homeland, she adopted a Hellenocentric approach to her work, and illustrated the idea of the racial continuity of the Greeks since Antiquity. She matched ancient sculptured with modern Greeks expressing obvious racial similarities. For instance, for the opening of the 1939 World exposition of New York, Nelly's contributed to the Greek pavillion with a gigantic collage of pictures of sculptures mingled with those of modern Greeks.

Thus it suited the racial ideology of the Fourth of August regime. Her series of pcitures of the Greek rural life and the beauty of the Greeks scenary conveyed the "Blood and Soil" ideology of the Greek fascist state.

A friend of Leni Riefenstahl (she accompanied and guided her to Olympia, where the German filmmaker recorded her "Olympia" film), her photographs appeared in official tourist publications and circulated abroad and contributed to the formation of the earliest visual image of Greece. The ancient monuments and archaeological sites of Greece were systematically depicted by Nelly's. Her experiments with natural light and her photographs of ancient temples in idyllic landscapes are true masterpieces and contributed to shape the visual image of Greece as the cradle of Western Civilization.
